Adding insult to injury: anthropogenic noise intensifies predation risk by an invasive freshwater fish species

چکیده
The ecological impact of invasive species is likely to be modulated by human-induced alterations in habitats, which represents another driver biodiversity loss. We tested the effect soundscape degradation on predation round goby Neogobius melanostomus, one Europe’s “worst species”. For this, we compared relationship between per capita rate and prey density (i.e., functional response) presence or absence motorboat sounds. Unexpectedly, fish displayed a stronger response with additional noise, could explained higher mobility promoting encounters prey. Our results suggest that anthropogenic noise exacerbate species.

Anthropogenic noise increases fish mortality by predation
Noise-generating human activities affect hearing, communication and movement in terrestrial and aquatic animals, but direct evidence for impacts on survival is rare. We examined effects of motorboat noise on post-settlement survival and physiology of a prey fish species and its performance when exposed to predators. Both playback of motorboat noise and direct disturbance by motorboats elevated ...

متن کاملAnthropogenic noise disrupts use of vocal information about predation risk.
Anthropogenic noise is rapidly becoming a universal environmental feature. While the impacts of such additional noise on avian sexual signals are well documented, our understanding of its effect in other terrestrial taxa, on other vocalisations, and on receivers is more limited. Little is known, for example, about the influence of anthropogenic noise on responses to vocalisations relating to pr...

Dialysis treatment per se can bring additional risk factors for inflammation, such as increased risk of local graft and fistula infections, impure dialysate or bio-incompatible membranes. Our study was designed to determine whether a hemodialysis session leads to an acute substantial alterati...
